For those of you who thought MGMT had three songs and were among the crowd that booed them off stage because ‘Kids’ didn’t feature in their set list at a recent London show– the new album may come as a surprise and sound a little out of the ordinary. But, for the die- hards among you, or just the people that have listened to more then three tracks, Congratulations would seem like a step in the right direction by MGMT. The album, in places, is reminiscent of ‘The youth’ and ‘Pieces of What’, but the real difference here is it tries to be weird, individual and different. Congratulations has been shrouded in hype ever since the release date was announced, yet, the album doesn’t live up to those high expectations. There are glimpses of a Radiohead influence but a 2nd rate job and the strange effects and cool image they’re trying to portray doesn’t seem to come naturally. On the other hand, there are some potential singes to come out of this album ‘I found a whistle’ and ‘Someone is Missing’, keep your ears pealed on Radio 1 for these. So, despite success and popularity going to their heads and ultimately thinking they can do anything, the somewhat mediocre effort is sure to gain popularity with the public because of the cool and diverse tag that MGMT carry.
