Quasi - Album: American Gong

Quasi have been around for almost two decades now, for the younger audience among you, that takes us back to a time when iPod’s were yet to be invented and CD’s were still being listened to by the majority of people.  By all accounts there is nothing that Quasi have achieved deemed ground breaking to their careers, playing gigs in their hometown of Portland and recording a whole host of average albums.  The thing is, they are doing nothing wrong, a spot of repetition never hurt anyone, besides we have all played our favourite bands CD to death, right?  Even so, when you’re churning out the 8th studio album of your career a little change would be more than welcome.  After all, you have had 7 albums to experiment with.  American Gong brings us yet more of the same non descript garage rock, with trademark distorted guitar riffage on not only one, but nine of the eleven tracks.  You would also fail miserably at noticing the addition of a new bass player, who doesn’t make the best of impacts.

Even when things are toned down, it still persists to sound like a discordant mess.  The only rest bite we are given on American Gong is ‘Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler’ and don’t be fooled by the French title, the majority of the song is recited in that trademark, often annoying, American drawl.  By no standards is this a tear-jerker. I kid you not, the finale to this rather monotonous album is a full minute of a wining, howling dog.   Recorded for what purpose I do not know.  Another average attempt from Quasi.
