With another new look comes another new album from The Killers. Three albums on from their almighty debut, The Killers release the new ‘Day & Age’ album. Ever since they burst into the limelight in 2002 the band can do no wrong. As for the album itself the trademark synthesizers that have made appearances in all previous albums are still dominant. However, the sound of the band has developed and matured a lot over the past year. With Brendon’s vocals better then ever on tracks like ‘Human’ and ‘Spaceman’ where his full vocal range is shown in a mere 5 minutes. With third track ‘Spaceman’ distend for dance floors and radio stations across the country; with its anthemic drumbeat and eerie synths at the beginning this is sure to be a single. Then comes the classic build up to the chorus, and the explosion of noise and power behind Brendon’s vocals is epic. However, my favorite part to this song is the middle 8. It is joy division-esque with reverb on the keys and spacey effects. Spaceman seems to resemble Ian Curtis on Pro plus.
Maybe this could have been a productive method for Joy Division? Who knows, it certainly does work for The Killers though! Other singles on ‘Day & Age’ include; ‘This is your life’ (and I’m not talking about the Ralph Edwards celebrity show) The bass line at the beginning somewhat resembles a Scissor Sisters track, but from then on it becomes unusually addictive. With jungle like effects prominent throughout the song, this is sure to have you on your feet in a matter of minutes. The Killers are like no other band out there, drawing influences from the likes of Joy Division, with the huge drum sounds, all the way though to the synths. It is hugely refreshing to hear a ‘real’ indie band taking control. With simple time signatures and foot tapping melodies, This stands to be yet another epic album from The Killers.
